Telephone/Visiting Befriender
Befriending involves visiting or telephoning an older person once a week to chat, listen and become a companion. Volunteers who visit an older person may talk, drink tea, share a game or watch TV together. Telephone befrienders will arrange to call at a certain time each week to chat and catch up on news.
Hours
Approximately 1 -2 hours per week. Flexible depending on your availability and the client’s needs.
Location
- Visits will be carried out at the client’s home
- Telephone befrienders will make calls from the Riverside Café in Guildford town centre.
Skills Required
- Good communication skills
- Understanding of and empathy with the needs of older people
- Reliability and commitment
- Patience and sensitivity
- Sense of humour
Expenses
All out of pocket expenses will be met.
Training
- Half-day induction to Age Concern Surrey
- Two half-day training courses
- On-going support and supervision
